Cherokee rose flowers
I found these flowers growing along Bayou Texar on the 12th Avenue bridge last summer. Thanks to Norman Vickers of the Pensacola Camellia club, I was able to correctly identify them as Cherokee roses.
LEGEND of the CHEROKEE ROSE
When the Trail of Tears started in 1838, the mothers of the Cherokee were grieving and crying so much, they were unable to help their children survive the journey. The elders prayed for a sign that would lift the mother’s spirits to give them strength. The next day a beautiful rose began to grow where each of the mother’s tears fell. The rose is white for their tears; a gold center represents the gold taken from Cherokee lands, and seven leaves on each stem for the seven Cherokee clans. The wild Cherokee Rose grows along the route of the Trail of Tears into eastern Oklahoma today.

The Curse of Tristen de Tuna
This photograph is from the Five Flags Trolley Tour last year. The title is a play on the name of Pensacola's founder, Tristán de Luna y Arellano (1519–1571) who was a Spanish Conquistador of the 16th century. Born in Borobia, Spain, he came to New Spain in about 1530, and was sent on an expedition to conquer Florida in 1559. In August of that year, he established an ephemeral colony at modern-day Pensacola, one of the earliest European settlements within the present-day United States.[1]

My Friend Nicole
I was lucky to visit with my friend Nicole and her step-father, Terry Solana, this lovely afternoon. We sipped coffee (well, they sipped coffee while I ate a ginormous Lox Works Bagel from Bagelheads!!) I snapped this shot out by the pool. I just love the way it turned out!!
